Sample Saturday: PinkPantheress - Stateside

Welcome back to Sample Saturday, where we discuss some of the samples used in your favorite songs. This week we will be covering PinkPantheress "Stateside" from her 2025 album, "Fancy That."

"Stateside" is pop-high energy song that tells the story of a girl who is interested in a lover overseas. Lyrics like "I tracked your plane ride for when you're in tonight Tell me, when is the next time I'll run into you," and "Never been abroad before Now I'm knocking through your door," she orchestrates a story of a girl from abroad traveling to the states to meet her lover for the first time.

The sample used in this song is Adina Howard's "Freak Like Me" from her 1995 album "Do You Wanna Ride." "Freak Like Me" reached number two on the US Hot Billboard 100 in 1995.

With PinkPantheress being the production genius she is, she takes the R&B slowed melody from "Freak Like Me." In addition to this, she keeps the same lyrical scheme as the sample. Keeping the same cadence as the first set of lyrics in "Freak Like Me" to match the same flow as her bridge in "Stateside," it is something that you cannot miss once you put the songs side to side.
