New Music Spotlight: R&B Edition II
Welcome back to The Daily Note’s weekly “New Music Spotlight”— where we talk about music your ears should be on, by artists to keep your eyes on.
This week’s “New Music Spotlight” showcases songs from emerging R&B artists who are crafting a distinctive sound within the genre. Their music is authentic in expression, allowing listeners to deeply resonate with it.
First Pick: “Badman” by nomi. begins with the lyrics, “Tried to control me boy, ‘cause you couldn’t control yourself,” immediately signaling to listeners that the person being addressed on this track is undeserving of redemption from the songstress. nomi. sings soulfully on this record with a tone that feels nostalgic. Toward the end of this song, nomi. sings her self-composed lyrics, “Don't bear all the blame / We were one and the same / See I changed my ways / You could have did the same”— sharing a cathartic realization with listeners.
Second Pick: “Room for 2” by Vesta has an intoxicating production style, with layers of sounds and vocals that add sensuality to the track. On the chorus, with the cadence of an alluring siren, Vesta softly sings the lyrics, “I gotta show you all the things I have for you / But you gotta do the math / there's only room for us two,” disclosing that she’s only an invested lover if the passion being explored is exclusive.
Third Pick: “Favorite Jeans” by the duo Jay Veno & Mo, known as Free Party, starts with laid-back chords that put listeners in an easy head-bopping groove. Jay Veno opens up the song singing the lyrics, “You got me right where you wanted, you prop me right in the corner,” narrating to listeners that the situation he has found himself in has him in an unfavorable position. As the track progresses, he goes on to say, “Your need for me ain’t equal to how I feel,” which conveys the desire for a partner to reciprocate the same feelings— and a universal longing listeners can resonate with.
