The Biggest Internet Sensation: THE STORY OF Woochie Wobbler
From making OnlyFans cam videos to being the star of her own music videos, my next featured artist is making waves as a platform crossing artist. She’s already taking Atlanta by storm but she’s really an international act, originally hailing from Ottawa, Canada. Let me introduce you to Woochie Wobbler.
“I like music that is unique and pushes boundaries; music that is unconventional.”
Growing up, Woochie was introduced to jazz, blues and artists such as Ray Charles by her father, which she credits as her first lesson of self-expression through music. “My more sentimental music is somewhat inspired by Ray Charles because he speaks about his pain in such a raw, unignorable way.” By 13, she was immensely tuned in the Soundcloud blog rap era, soaking in viral artists including Future and Playboi Carti and then later on NBA Young Boy, Yeat, So Faygo, TiaCorine, Babyxsosa, Rokkstarnova, Baby Osama, untiljapan and Baby Kartel. When she got into the music making process herself, she started attaching herself to pluggnb beats, as they provided a sense of clarity for what kind of sound she wanted to go for. “I'm not from a very “musical” town so I'm not exactly inspired by any Canadian music. I approach music with a blank slate and build with anything that sounds good. I don’t have a name for it. I get on all types of beats, sometimes I sing, sometimes I rap, sometimes I don’t structure songs conventionally [with no hook or no chorus].”
During the pandemic, she made the brave decision to leave her northern homeland for the US, first landing in Texas and eventually making her way to Atlanta. Feeling stuck in her remote work job, she took to sex work to sustain her living. “ I was fired from my job because when we had to transition to working from home, it made me hate my job and I would always call in sick. I actually really loved that job and didn't wanna lose it but I couldn’t stand working from home.” In November 2021, she debuted her music career with “OnlyFans Girl”, a head nod to her life behind the cam and it was met with general support, as fans were greatly receptive about her new music development. Since then, she has been building more and more confidence with her releases, as she pushes fans to see the duality of both her lucrative and creative endeavors.
“At one point, there were a few people that said nasty things to me because they didn’t like seeing me try to transition from sex work or thought I shouldn’t even try to make music to begin with. I feel a lot of the inner conflict and confusion that comes with separating my identities as a sex worker and that as an artist really boils down to my basic respect. I know that I will meet a lot of people because I do music. The question I guess I will sometimes have in the back of mind is: Are they going to eventually sexualize me if they find out I do OnlyFans? When it comes to music, I do not want to work with anyone who sexualizes me in any sort of way.” However, Woochie is making the music she wants to make, adding proudly, “I really do love making music. I don’t think there’s anything anyone could say to me that would make me wanna stop.
If you’ve never heard a Woochie track, she immediately recommends that her latest tape “Is My Future Bright” is the project you need to hear in order to get a good feel of her artistry style and persona. The tape garnished her positive reviews, even to the point that she was featured by Pitchfork. She graciously thanked her manager, Mr. Xanborghini, as being the backbone of the tape’s production, track listing, marketing and overall successful reception. “I actually had no idea I was gonna be dropping a project until about two months before it dropped. I don’t even think I would’ve had the confidence to drop that first project if it weren’t for [Mr. Xanborghini]. The songs that are featured are songs that were made all across 2023, and it ties my sound together really well because it showcases my growth as an artist. Every song on there was carefully chosen and to me, every song on there is enjoyable. Short and simple, no skips.”
So what’s next for Woochie? This fall, get ready for her next project “Nosedive”. From the title alone, I foreshadow that she will take a literal dive into her more influential sounds and callbacks to some of her favorite artists. However, Woochie gives me an even deeper meaning for the impending project:
“It’s a really personal album, I’m trying to be as vulnerable as possible on it because I’m not someone who likes to speak on what pains me so I challenged myself to do that in my project. The theme of the project centers around my life before leaving Canada. I dealt with a lot of pain and confusion while being at home; a lot of reminiscing about bad times and holding onto pain but eventually realizing that all of that is behind me and I have a much brighter future to look forward to. I want people to understand me as Raven, not too much as Woochie in this project. I held onto a lot and this project will be providing a lot of release and healing for me on my end. For those that intend to listen, I do hope it resonates with the right people and it inspires someone. I want my music to be meaningful while also being something most people have never heard before.”
When asked if she has any closing words to her incoming new fans, she gives an introspective statement: “I wanna try pop, jazz, rock, anything really as long as it’s pleasing to the ear. I feel like I’ve created my own lane with music and I want to keep pushing that as far as I can take it. I’m ready to stop being scared and try to really do everything I can to put myself out there as an artist.” While we are anticipating Nosedive, check out her new music video for “just me + just you” on YouTube now.
