The Black Sheep: SCHUY

“They don’t call me 2Fly for no reason, earn a new pair of wings every season”

- ANOMALY

With a sound that can be categorized as fluid, cinematic, and unpredictable, this artist is creating pure bodies of work that represent her intentional storytelling skills. Proudly utilizing her creative tools to authentically reel people into her world, let’s introduce you to the flyest, Miss SCHUY.

Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, SCHUY’s Funky Town roots is the premise that started her appreciation for the arts and performing. Between her mom, PawPaw and Nana, her childhood was immersed in deep, feel-good soul music. However, she especially credits her late father’s entrepreneur life as owner and operator of his barbershop and event promotion company as a firsthand experience of seeing what it looked like to build something centered in culture and community from the ground up. Even with a close-knit family background, she just always knew she was meant to stand out. “What’s crazy is, I started off really shy. I used to shrink myself to make other people comfortable. Oftentimes feeling alone in crowded rooms. But once I grew comfortable with being outside of my comfort zone and was introduced to the stage, something clicked.”

After childhood, she uprooted herself from the small-town soul with big-city hustle and came to Atlanta to earn her bachelor’s degree in Mass Media Arts from the Illustrious Clark Atlanta University. While attending college, SCHUY’s mind became set: “Even before officially stepping into music, the arts gave me a voice when I didn’t always know how to use my own. Whether it was dance, step team, spoken word, or theatre, I never felt like I fit into one box. I wasn’t just the artsy kid. I wasn’t just the smart kid. I wasn’t just the performer. I was all of it, and for a long time, I felt like that was a problem. However, I’ve always known I was meant to create. Music just became the medium where I could merge everything—performance, visuals, rhythm, and raw emotion.”

Back in February 2025, SCHUY gave us one of her greatest gifts: her debut album Black Sheep. A breath of fresh air into the music scene, Black Sheep gives us hip hop that represents growth, and a statement of stepping into yourself. Her accompanying listening experience at BardoATL was an otherworldly experience to those who wanted an unorthodox way to take in the new sound. “The energy was unreal—interactive, colorful, and full of life. QR codes were scattered throughout the venue, giving guests access to exclusive links where they could listen at their own pace. We set up coloring stations throughout the space, offering a moment of peace and a little inner child healing for anyone who needed it. We had merch giveaways, good vibes, hors d'oeuvres, buzzing mocktails, and a room full of people who truly felt the music. And the way everyone showed up in theme? Perfect. The style guide I posted on Instagram set the tone, and people understood the assignment.”

The reception of Black Sheep has been purely exceptional. “stoop kid”, “OBSIDIAN MINK”, and “ANOMALY” seem to be the fan favorites but “barn talk/bo peep” and “enola’s home” are all about her. These are the ones that truly introduce you to my point-of-view and help connect the dots along the way. Funny enough, “enola’s home” wasn’t even originally made for the album. Originally crafted by my producer DeMaugé, we anticipated to drop the song back in 2021 but something was redirecting us to hold on to it for the future. Ironically, once the Black Sheep album concept came together, I realized that the song had a home on the project—it was just waiting for the right moment. I would declare those two as my “deep cuts” – only true listeners would claim one of those records as their favorites! This album is me breaking out of that and standing fully in my truth. Every track on this project is a testimony of that journey. Some songs feel like growing pains, some feel like breaking free, and some feel like stepping into your greatness.”

Self-expression is second nature to SCHUY. From music to fashion to poetry, she gives reverence to culture, color and spirituality. Like a scientist in the lab constantly testing new formulas, music experimentation is essential. “I approach music like an inventor—every track is a chance to create something new. I’m obsessed with the “what if” of it all. What if I stack harmonies in a way that feels off-kilter but still beautiful? What if I bend genres and make something that doesn’t exist yet? What if I take a childhood melody and flip it into something haunting? If I’m not experimenting, I’m not growing. And if I’m not growing, then what’s the point?”

Speaking from her ever-evolving taste, she gives credit to the likes of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Missy Elliott, OutKast, TLC, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat with her sound and Quincy Jones, Timbaland, and Pharrell in terms of production. “I take a lot of notes and get inspiration from trailblazing artists and are unafraid to explore outside the lines and push boundaries. I infinitely respect that each of them has redefined their lanes and are bonafide worldbuilders.” You can hear this sonic infusion in songs as she blends genres like hip-hop, rap, alternative, rock, and pop.

With her new wings clipped on, she has her sights set on abundance. She promises we are getting more music, more visuals and more unforgettable performances. “I’m locked in, and this year is about taking everything to the next level. The sky is NOT the limit. There’s more life beyond the stars above!” You can find SCHUY on all socials as @schuy2fly.
