Sample Saturday: Tyler, The Creator - Ring Ring Ring
Welcome back to Sample Saturday, where we talk about the samples from some of your favorite songs. This week we will be discussing the sample used in Tyler, The Creator’s self-produced song, “Ring Ring Ring,” from his 2025 album “DON’T TAP THE GLASS.” This week’s submission was sent in from Eddy V and you can follow him on Instagram @Eddyvenji. Now let’s get into the sample!
The disco-funk melody tells the story of Tyler, The Creator calling a former lover as he recollects their fond memories together. Despite being told not to contact the former lover, he does in hopes to re-sparking a connection, “I know you said not to call you again, but I miss you. And I hope I can see you one more gin 'cause I miss you,” he sings. Leaving a message in hopes they will call him back as he awaits that ring ring ring.
The sample used in the song “All in the Way You Get Down” by Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio, from the 1981 record “A Woman Needs Love.” The album charted on the US Billboard 200 in 1981 peaking at No. 13 and US Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums on Billboard in 1981 at No. 1.
The R&B pop soul groove entails how the love interest plays no games when it comes to her feelings and how Parker found a way to let her slip through his fingers through his ego. “It's all in the way you get down (all in the way you get down) /There's no time for fooling around (fooling around),” he sings.
Tyler, The Creator takes the sample and makes minimal changes to the bassline. Keeping the foundation simple by pitching up the tone and adding additional keys along with an amplified percussion to emphasize the disco funkiness of the song. To top off the song with the replaying of the telephone ring throughout the song to maintain that awaiting for your call essence with a talk box as background throughout the song making the song his own.
