She’s A Mutha: BbyMutha’s “Muthaleficent 2: Gold Edition” (Album Review)

“They want me to be a rapper, I want me to be myself”

  • PMS

When it comes to regional rap, the South has all kinds of flavors. Right now, let’s talk about Tennessee. Besides being one of the birthplaces of the horrorcore and gangsta rap subgenres, we have witnessed some great female rappers develop from The Volunteer State. MCs including Princess Loko, La Chat and Gangsta Boo whose rap bravado speaks of proud pimp talk came from this region. Bbymutha continues to carry that torch through the release of her latest album, “Muthaleficent 2: Gold Edition concreting a music discography milestone.

If you didn’t already know, she’s a mother to two sets of boy-girl fraternal twins, which alone is a rare phenomenon. Being a mother as a main recurring theme in her music speaks to how she advocates for women in the music industry who do not look at having children as a hindrance to their careers; if anything, it’s a bonus. For this album, she starts off her tracklist with an informal, funny recording conversation between her and her son Tyler. This gives a realistic view into her world, balancing being a rapper and motherhood. Now let’s give a word to the standout tracks on the album.

“I ain’t tryna make you bitches dance, I’m tryna heal my pain” On PMS, she starts out the actual songlist with a more introspective rap, giving adherence to listeners to take her in as a person before they even take in her music. “Lil gangsta bitch, I’m from Sheridan” Muthaleficent March is my personal favorite especially after the beat switch. It is imperative that Tig Ol Bitty starts making its way to more DJ sets in the big cities. Featuring Zeloopers, it was an instant party banger as soon as I heard it.

Fly Anakin helps bring alive her stripped down track “Traphouse” for the freaks. “Love to gossip, let’s talk about me” Bbymutha completely goes off on “gossip <3” the hit single from the album. She gives remnants of that same Atlanta futuristic sound that was later channelled on “Metro Boomin Presents: A Futuristic Summa.” She was already ahead of bringing back the wave. “clap!!!” is definitely a contender as a club banger. “Dont answer to nobody so I irk a lot of nerves,” “rap bitch 101” is a track that demonstrates her raw rap skills.

Muthaleficient 2: Gold Edition” gives us an abundance of dance tracks but is balanced out by her raw flow. A very solid body of work. A rapper. A mutha. Bbymutha proves yet again why she’s still inspiring the rap girls ten years in the game. Make sure to tap into Bbymutha and “Muthaleficient 2: Gold Edition” on all major streaming platforms!
