A$AP Rocky & KayCyy Bow Their Heads and “pray4dagang”
It’s 1 AM at the function. The air outside is a bit chill still cus it ain’t quite summer yet but it’s damn near it; best time of the year: May. Elbow to elbow in the venue with a drink in the left and a friend’s drink in the right. Then, right there, a familiar sound hits. It’s been playing all over the place for a couple months already. “Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2” sounds off like a siren’s song making many groups of different kinds of people hit the pit in front of the DJ. Pure enjoyment and not a care in the world.
A week later the video for “L$D” drops and makes a splash with it’s visual likenesses to “Enter The Void” along with it being an amazing single that teases 2 songs at once.
Insert a motivated artist: A$AP Rocky with “At.Long.Last.A$AP” for those long nights. This same artist woke up ten years later and dropped a new single, “pray4dagang” with KayCyy. Hear me out. I think this being the first single we care about in a while makes sense. I get it. I’m seeing the vision. Especially with the “new music soon!!!” mentality he was riding on all last year while releasing singles and random verses.
I’ve played this new song a handful of times now because of the feeling that remains each time: uncertainty. I’m not sure if I like this or not. And with the amount of times I’ve played it that may speak more about me at this moment than on Rocky, but it’s got to mean something on the adverse end too. He doesn’t have to do this… maybe he feels that? Maybe he’s trying to find what’s next? Channel some of the old too? I think this is what happens when your art and personality put you in the world’s microscope as you’re constantly evolving.
This uncertainty is further supported by the fact the video of this song was taken down from Youtube. I’m sure there’s a reason but maybe not. So let’s get on to what remains: the song itself.
I’m NOT mad. At all. “Pray4dagang” starts with KayCyy’s wonderful vocals waxing poetic for a few bars. Then makes way for Rocky’s solemn and stern chanting of the chorus. Being jiggy as ever. “Pray for myself hope I don’t get in my own way” being one of his prayers here in the first verse is very fitting. Then the second verse lays out some more thoughts that have been plaguing his mind lately.
I think the bigger issue is that with his celebrity status only continuing to increase, it has become less and less about the music. Because if people cared to listen they could hear that this new single sounds like lost studio files from “At.Long.Last.A$AP” days. And they might like it. But, hey, what do I know? I’m just the guy saying, “actually sit with the music and breathe with it for a second.” That takes time & patience sometimes though. Something like a rare commodity these days.
Either way, we’re about to get A$AP Rocky’s magnum opus (as if he hasn’t given it to us already with his sophomore album all those years ago) OR we’re about to get something we can 360 windmill slam into landfills across the globe.
When will we get it? Not sure of that, to be honest. We’re tuned in regardless.
