Sample Saturday: Kelis - Trick Me
Welcome back to Sample Saturday, where we discuss samples from some of your favorite songs. Today we're doing a bit of a throwback with Kelis' single "Trick Me" off her third studio album "Tasty," produced by Dallas Austin.
"Trick Me" explores Kelis' feelings of being fed up with how her lover has treated her in the past and putting her foot down. Realizing that she will no longer put up with this heinous behavior, she uses the song as a vessel for a harsh goodbye.
The sample used in this song is a simple rhythm played on the Mellotron called "Foxtrot." A Mellotron is a electro-mechanical musical instrument that creates its own sound with already recorded instruments. Created in 1963 by Henry Chamberlin in Birmingham, England, it carried the purpose of playing instruments without needing a full scale orchestra. Within the Mellotron were pre-recorded rhythms, one of them being the infamous "Foxtrot."
Austin takes the swing sound of the "Foxtrot" and adds a snare and turns the once ballroom dancing song into a catchy ear-worm that never leaves.
