Sample Saturday: Divine Council - Dick In Da Dope

Welcome back to Sample Saturday, where we discuss samples from some of your favorite songs. This week we will be discussing the sample used in Divine Council's song "Dick in Da Dope," from their 2016 album "Council World."

"Dick in Da Dope" talks about the relationship $ilkMoney has with marijuana. His love for marijuana is so prominent amongst his other relationships and he dedicates so much time to the drug, he might as well have sex with the dope.

Coming out in 2016, the song fits perfectly for that era of music. Reminiscent of a time capsule, "Dick in Da Dope" takes listeners back to a time before SoundCloud rappers knew the foundation they were setting for underground artists to come after them.

"Dick in Da Dope" samples "思い出のスクリーン (Omoide No Screen)" by Yasuko Kawashima off the 1976 funk soul jazz fusion album "あなた…" which depending on the use, can either be translated to " you" or " dear."

Producer Lord Fubu takes the original melody of the sample track and speeds up the tempo taking the rhythm from slow paced, to a bit more upbeat. Included in the sped up rhythm, the chimes are also sped up maintaining the playfulness of the sample. Adding notes and keeping the initial sample as the foundation of the sound, Fubu brings in the drums with a kick accompanied by the clap and snare wrapping the beat altogether.

Putting this all together, Fubu creates a beat that is not only fitting for the era of music in the 2016 era, but an ear-stimulating sound that makes you want to bop your head instinctively.
