Jelani Imani - The Stranger (Album Review)

In January 2026, Clayton County music artist and poet Jelani Imani shared with the world an astral sonic experience. Betrayal, disgust, reminiscence, self-discovery and the overall revelation of sonder. You can literally feel the processing of emotions with each track. “The Stranger” is an 11-track movie for your ears. I attended the release party for “The Stranger” back in February and it was a class act of a show. Aside from the wonderful guest performers including DavidThaTragic, DvDx and Muddy Mya, you could feel the emotion that was intentionally emulated in each song during his performance. Following the show, I got the opportunity to get artistic input from Jelani himself.

When asked about what was his intended message/theme of “The Stranger,” he shares:

For me, it starts with that gunshot to the stomach. Being willing to take a risk for yourself and trusting your judgment, intentions and intuition. [On the other hand], it’s about how ignoring your inner compass could destroy you both internally and externally.”

All songs were arranged, written, and produced solely by himself. He features background vocals from members of the itsonlyoneway music collective, that he is member of. Bohemian Lonely, mila bucks, Alli Cat and Lucid Luc, just to name a few. Respectfully, this is a contemporary rock album. With the blending of soft rock and hardcore rock sounds, Jelani creates a cinematic sound piece. Let’s give a brief breakdown of the album’s highlight tracks:

“THE STRANGER” - Jelani opens the album with exploring the feelings of betrayal and wanting for vengeance from a past friend that apparently did something foul & unforgivable. “love shouldn’t hurt" - One of my personal favorites - it’s sexy, the bass guitar undertones, something you would definitely hear playing on a bar by a beach. The subject matter is an oxymoron; it speaks of sacrificing yourself to love yourself to the point where you are creating your own personal hell within a person. “a leg up (lookin for friends)” - This definitely sounds like an abstraction of being met with the reality of meeting people in the [music] industry. Thinking that you were making friends but later realizing that the relationship was just all a chess game.

“bein u. (its better than bein liked)” - NO TASTE! The latest hit single and a mantra to those that are trying way too hard to fit in with the status quo: “YOU WANNA BE LIKED SO BAD!” “mirror mirror!” - An out-of-body experience in which Jelani seems to be experiencing a kind of ego death. “afterimage (take a pic!)” - A three-section track that touches on the feeling of being lost in a moment of time, capturing a moment in time so you won’t lose that feeling and just wanting to be able to feel the moment.

When asked about the making of “The Stranger,” Jelani relished on the creative process:

I had a lot of fun recording songs like “bein u” and “mirror mirror” because the energy just felt so raw in the room. Actually “mirror mirror” and “a leg up” were two of the first songs I ever played drums for. My favorite session was when I was jamming with BOLO [Bohemian Lonely]  on OPUS.”

When asked his feelings upon initial release and reception, he transparently shares:

I’ll admit, I was mildly nervous to release but I knew that it was good music and it’s something that I’d been living with and holding for over three years. Once it was out there and seeing that people were so into it, that’s when I became happy and fulfilled. We made something special and I’m just excited to continue to spread the word.”

Jelani Imani has been a staple within the Atlanta music scene for years. However, by giving us this project, he gave his fans an opportunity to learn a whole new dimension within his art.
