Cordae - The Crossroads (Album)
“What’s meant for you will never miss you” is the feeling that Cordae channels into every lyric here with his latest album, “The Crossroads”. Have to say: it’s a solid piece of work. Cordae could always rap, that’s not a question. But this one is a more matured person detailing his current life right through the music.
Anytime rappers wax poetic about direct family, I sit and listen because it’s usually crafted with so much love. That’s why songs like “06 Dreamin” aren’t wasted on me at all. He told about his mom’s career as a singer and paid homage by having the producer sample a song of hers he always loved for the beat. He also speaks on the love for his newborn daughter with “Shai Afeni”. He also raps about the passing of his grandmother with “Now You Know”. It’s hard to hate when the content is so vulnerable and honest. It’s poetry throughout this, for real.
Even the features bought in wholeheartedly. Like some input from Lil Wayne who said “you have to approach every song like it’s people’s first time listening to you” as well as advice on songs he wasn’t even featured on (which is two of them, btw).
So when you have talented artists creating with intention and laboring over every line, it’s hard to deny the product. Will “The Crossroads” end up in my rotation moving forward? Probably not. Will I revisit it occasionally? Sure. Is it a good listen? Absolutely. Are there great bars and solid beats? Without question. But hey, check it out and see for yourself. If you listen to only three songs from this (not named above, please check those out) I would say “Saturday Mornings ft Lil Wayne”, “Pray ft Ty Dolla $ign”, and “Nothings Promised”.
If you want to hear more about the album, Cordae sat with Ebro and had an extensive conversation about the project. It gave me a new appreciation for this collection of songs even as I’ve been giving it a few spins throughout the week.
Also, shout out to the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony nod.
