Benny The Butcher - Everybody Can’t Go (Review)

A few weeks prior, Benny the Butcher released his inaugural major label-backed album titled "Everybody Can’t Go”, a highly anticipated release for two principal reasons: firstly, his recent signing with Def Jam prompted speculation about potential alterations to his underground sound and style; secondly, it marked the first year since his debut album without an annual release (skipping the 2023 release). Fans, myself included, were notably excited about this album.

Primarily produced by The Alchemist and Hit-Boy, "Everybody Can’t Go" presented a fusion of mainstream and underground production, a departure from the norm that, while different, was not displeasing.
Personally, I found the incorporation of more underground producers preferable. While Hit-Boy's contributions were appreciated, particularly the track "How To Rap”, I would welcome a full-length project with a focus on underground/boom bap rap style producers.

Regarding lyricism, delivery, and flow, Benny remained consistent, offering compelling storytelling about his experiences in the drug trade and insightful life reflections. This consistency, alongside his support for emerging underground artists like Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, and others, was a highlight of the album. However, occasional mainstream elements, such as the chorus on "Back Again" featuring Snoop Dogg, felt unnecessary and disruptively contrasting. Similarly, certain aspects, like the chorus on "One Foot In”, were less favorable compared to Benny's previous work. The instances where the inclusion of mainstream rap blended smoothly can be seen in his tracks featuring artists like Jadakiss ("Pillow Talk & Slander") and Lil’ Wayne ("Big Dog").

Despite these minor drawbacks, "Everybody Can’t Go" largely delivers, maintaining an overall high standard. As a devoted fan, I anticipate future releases from Benny, hopeful for projects that match the excellence of "Burden of Proof" or the "Tana Talk" series. This debut major label album sets a promising precedent, and I eagerly await future developments.
