Sky Bento - Bento Box: Greatest Hits Vol. 1 (Album ReviEw)
From defeating demons to demanding what’s owed.
Sky Bento (fka Swych) has spent many years developing his craft while always creating what’s true to his heart at the moment. It’s reached the point he can cash in a little bit and look back through his catalogue at the progress.
“Bento Box: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1” is exactly that. Throughout this project are moments of strength, as well as moments of weakness in his life, but they’re all aligned with Bento’s truths.
He takes us in chronological order from 2017’s “Spirit Guns” to 2 new joints in “Sliderz” and “I Can’t Luv U (Freestyle)”.
Although his style continues to evolve, he stays true to interpolations of his influences, pop culture references and some crooning about what he deals with daily.
A great example is standout song “Chip Skylark”, in which he references and relates to a pop star in the cartoon series, “The Fairly OddParents”. The way he channels it into what it sounds like now is a talent in itself as he vocalizes some woes of this industry into a sonic adventure. That’s another aspect of this Sky Bento project that adds layers.
Sky Bento’s “Greatest Hits, Vol. 1” gives a new light to each previously released song. The musicality is apparent as he highlights songs that build from the opening second to the closing breath. The hooks hit a bit harder. The bridges connect even more and never feel too overcrowded by traffic. The outros bring everything home and leave you satisfied with each concluding frame. Yet, you still want to take another piece from the “Bento Box” to see what’s next in each song.
Overall, Sky Bento’s “Bento Box: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1” is a great place to start if you’re just now tuning in! For those that have been watching, it feels like an appropriate reset and leaves you anticipating what 2021 has in store from him.
Enjoy!
-Louie.
