Exclusive Interview: Nicodagoat “Take It Slow”

Aside from the underground rap scene still holding weight in Atlanta, it is imperative to also shed light to the R&B artists who still see the importance of expressing emotion through the music. I am a personal fan of a good concept album and Nicodagoat gives us a whole rollercoaster of emotions through this album. Admiration, jealousy, limerence - all stacked into this 10-track tape. I am thankful to get an exclusive word from the wordsmith himself on the creation of this project; presenting Atlanta’s own Nicodagoat: 

Question: Give a little insight into the creative process that was taken into building this album.

“My creative process for Take It Slow is going through life and letting the music come to me. I went through some shit and that experience just made the music flow more. I was able to really express myself how I wanted to. And in my mind, Slow Jamz was always a trilogy. So this was the last of the trilogy.”

Question: What was your intention behind creating this project?

“The intention for this project is I wanted to conceptualize this listening experience as a talking stage. From song one to ten, it’s a sequence. If you listen through the album’s progression, the start of it is like you know introducing yourself and getting to know someone. Like a “Hey, let me show you myself.” You meet her, you're excited to know her, you like her ways. Then shit starts getting a little different. The cupcake phase is over and now it’s, “Where your friends at? Where are you going?” At the end, it’s a “You know, a nigga done fucked up, I hate me too.” It's really a short story there.”

Question: How are you feeling about the reception of the album since you’ve dropped? 

“The reception has been good. When I’ve asked people what their favorite song is - I tend to get various responses. Everyone likes different songs - Each song has its own impact and holds its own weight. It depends on what you're into the music for. You know if you’ve been through real relationship issues, you would feel “Hate Me Too”. If you want something to dance to, you got “Table For Two”. If you’re in the mood to sing a little bit, you got “Unlikely”. so it's just a different mix of getting into that same point at the end where it's just like ah here we go again.

This is a solid project from start to finish. Sometimes you just need something to reminiscence to. Nicodagoat’s Take It Slow is about giving yourself the vulnerability to go through the motions that you would otherwise avoid when going through a relationship.
