HRVY Dent Rides Through Heart-break on “High Horse”
Some heartbreaks sound like silence while others ride back in with a grin. HRVY Dent’s “High Horse” opens with gentle folk-country guitar chords, setting the stage for a story of love lost and lessons learned. But don’t mistake the melody for misery; this is heartbreak with a pulse.
“I told her that I love her, she said that it’s okay.” That’s the turning point. As soon as the line lands, producer Nick Nash drops the bass in, lifting the energy like a cowboy refusing to sulk. It’s the sonic embodiment of getting back on your high horse, that moment when heartbreak meets hope and you realize healing might just sound like 808s and open roads.
Blending country warmth with soulful melodies and hip-hop-infused basslines, “High Horse” pulls from multiple worlds without losing its stride. HRVY’s songwriting leans into self-awareness, “Tried to settle down, but I guess it’s not for me,” capturing the push and pull between wanting love and knowing freedom fits better.
Personally, I’ve always loved songs that contradict their beat, where heartbreak dances instead of dragging. “High Horse” thrives in that duality and I caught myself jigging to the upbeat sadness. Just when you start feeling bad for our cowboy, the rhythm picks up, reminding you that sometimes the best way to move on is to move.
I had the opportunity to attend a private listening event for HRVY in August, and hearing him speak about his journey made this record hit even harder. Learning how he transitioned from rapping to making country music and how he turned his life around after some challenges, including time in jail, was truly inspiring. The old rap records sounded great, but this new urban country-soul fusion he’s creating for his upcoming Love is for Losers EP feels fresh, fearless, and rooted in purpose. He’s telling his story his way, and you can hear the growth in the music.
“High Horse” proves heartbreak doesn’t have to sound heavy. Sometimes, it can ride back into the sunset, head high, heart light, and beat knocking. Stream it now and let the ride begin.
