BLK ODYSSY - 1-800 FANTASY (Album)
“You’ve reached 1-800-FANTASY”, and I’m glad to be here.
Self-proclaimed “Black ass Radiohead” and “Thug as rock star” BLK ODYSSY lays it all out on his newest project, “1-800 FANTASY”. By the fourth song, “PHASE”, you can already feel you’re in for a special ride. It’s honestly more like a road trip magically packed into about 30 minutes as we explore so many states of his mind and pockets of artistry.
This project has guitars, drums, and melodies that would fit right in with a 90’s alternative rock band. There’s some funky synths and grooves that make you close your eyes feel like you’re floating between Saturn’s rings. There’s moments of stripped down ballads that bear your soul to your honest self as you share tears that were held back. It’s obvious BLK ODYSSY put a ton of care into each second.
It’s not just the musicianship that shines. BLK ODYSSY flexes his pen by taking us through the classic story of exploring a budding crush with someone and seeing where it goes, but he does it in a way that keeps you dialed in. “DELILAH” sings about the sparks with “your lipstick stains on the back of my mind” and eventually spiraling into dejection on “R U STILL THERE?”. I know what it feels like to “put all the effort into the wrong places” while living in fantasy-love-land.
With help from features by Wiz Khalifa, Jackie Giroux, Harry Edohoukwa, and Joey Bada$$, this album lives up to its title. Each song is its own fantasy world serving the larger sonic picture that is the “1-800 FANTASY” universe.
The fact that this, “Bando Stone”, “Love Gun II”, and “SNAKEGANG” all dropped on the same night should be enough to mark our calendars as a date to remember fondly at the end of the year. As if 2024 hasn’t spoiled us enough musically. And there’s still plenty days left.
