Introvert Event Review: The Function 401’s Hip-Hop Game Show
What up y’all. Sky Bento back here once again with some words for that ass. One time for your mind. Man, last night was mad real. I got to take part in the latest of The Function 401’s Hip-Hop Game Show. This was especially dope for me, because honestly I don’t really do a bunch of events like that. But PVD culture really comes out to shine in its events and it’s been a real blessing for me to experience. You might could not tell from my writing style, but I’m actually quite the introvert. I prefer to spend the majority of my free time in the freedom of my own home with a joint, a red cup of Carlo Rossi sangria (sponsor me now), and some Super Smash Bros. to a soundtrack of Nipsey Hussle songs. I know I’m not the only homebody out there though, so I wanted to put a spotlight on some of our dopest local events specifically through the lens of an introvert like myself. As the inaugural article for this series, this one’s gonna be a little different than the rest especially since I didn’t get much of a chance to be introverted given as I was a contestant but let me give you the rundown of how it go down.
So let me give you the setting and tell you why it’s better than the crib. First of all, it’s at Crib. If you’ve ever been to Stay Silent’s venue, then you know what I’m talking about. There’s something so uniquely dope about the lighting in there that’s just extremely soothing. Not all introverts are equally introverted, but me myself & I are really big on lighting in terms of finding myself comfortable in a space. I keep a smart bulb in my living room just to match whatever color I’m feeling, and the dim lights mixed with some blues make the space feel welcoming and calm. The bar has great service as well. It’s never taken too long for me to get my beverage, and Crib’s signature “finished basement” cocktail goes down real smooth. The walls are lined with vendors if you feel so inclined to support a local business. And yes, they are Black owned (or at least Brown, I didn’t ask for ethnicities or nothing like that).
This particular event was a hip-hop game show, specifically centered on the Dirty South. You know the era. From Lil Jon & the crunk sound to snap music to the genesis of trap music. DJ Kris Fame kept the vibes steady on the ones and twos as he mixed in modern hits with these classic songs we all grew up with. Me & Sub Zero Brando went head to head in a few rounds of trivia, finishing lyrics, guessing samples, guessing reversed songs and more. I’m not gonna toot my own horn much because IYKYK but Brando is a hell of an entertainer. He was able to keep the audience engaged with his competitive nature enough to even get the quietest person in the room to pay attention. As a big fan of the 2000’s & Southern Hip-Hop in general, these type of joints I like to dance to most if I do choose to dance.
If you’re a nerd like me, it’s dope to follow along with the trivia and root for your favorite contestant. Previously, TDN’s own Coog & Complex Ambition’s Sound went head to head in a battle of Lil Wayne trivia. This was my first experience with The Function, and led me to get involved with this most recent iteration. Cristina (our lovely host) made quick mention of a Jay Z theme coming in the near future, so if any of this sounds like your cup of tea, be sure to follow @thefunction401 & @cristinasev_ on Instagram to find out about the next function!
